Bible Study Weekly Recap - TEMPERANCE

By Jerry Baca

Today is Memorial Day 2026. I moved to Las Vegas on Memorial weekend 1983. So today is my 43rd anniversary of living in Las Vegas. For over 40 years I have mostly wandered the desert. But I came to Jesus here. I met my wife here. All of our kids were born here. Most of our grandkids were born here. One of my sisters with her grown kids and grandkids lives here and one of Karen’s brothers lives in Las Vegas with his grown kids and grandkids as well (presently). Over time, a few of our kids moved away from Vegas but moved back. Maybe it is not so bad here after all. It gets a tad hot here in the summertime. In winter, when I might get a little cold, I read about blizzards and snowstorms. We have no hurricanes here obviously.  During the 40 plus years here, I’ve never experienced a major earthquake or tornado (thank God) here. I meet people from all over the United States and many different nations of the world that visit here. Most of them say things like “you’re not missing much”, if I say I have never been there before wherever they live. I met one guy from Nebraska once. I said to him, “I’ve never been there”. He said, “Well we have corn, and we have grass.” I thought about it for a second and said, “Well, I’ve eaten corn, and I’ve smoked grass”. That was before it was medical or legal and before I was saved of course. Part of my drug problem back in the day was where do I get it? And now that dispensaries have sprung up like weed everywhere, I no longer partake. Is that exercising self-control? No, not really, I just don’t want or need it anymore. Plus, it stinks. For a while, Karen said we should be called “stink city.” I no longer want drugs or alcohol. If you need pain meds, I understand. I don’t like pain either.

The biggest take for me in learning about the fruit of the Spirit-temperance, is not my will, but God’s will be done. It does have to do with our behavior. As a Christian, we should ask, “What would Jesus do?” We need the power of the Holy Ghost to help us. God gives us new desires and a new heart. I no longer want to do the things that I used to do that were bad for me. I still need help with eating right and I still love soda. The real thing (Coca-Cola) or the right one baby (Pepsi), I like em both. But I am no longer the man I used to be. And God can help me to lose weight. Not easy. I am now sixty years old, so I am about halfway there. My wife and I are planning to be on the planet for a long time, unless the Good Lord takes us home first. I believe that God has promised us a full life and a long life. I pray that you also will be in good health and prosper. Be blessed in Jesus mighty name. And, happy Memorial Day!
