Bible Study Weekly Recap - Poor In Spirit!

Yes, it is I again! Jerry asked me if I wanted to write one and so I’m letting him off the hook this week. Although, I assured him that everyone loves his blogs, so I can’t wait to read his next one. This week we began a new series on the beatitudes. In the gospel of Matthew chapter 5, we read all about the sermon on the mount that Jesus delivered to his disciples. Within this there are eight beatitudes. If you are like me, I learned about them when I was a kid, but I really didn’t pay too much attention. Even as an adult, I kind of just read them and moved on without giving too much thought to their full meaning. So, I’m kind of excited now to be doing a deep dive on these and spending some time on each of them.
We acknowledge in our study that each one is another step toward further glory. The bible says in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we transform into His image going from glory (one level) to glory (another level). In the first level, we find that we must recognize the fact that we are nothing without God. This is the essence of being “poor in spirit.” We must humble ourselves before Him and realize that we are bankrupt, spiritually speaking. Fortunately, we do not need to be in poverty in the natural. In fact, God wants to bless our finances, so we can be rich monetarily and still be poor in spirit. Spiritually, we can’t do anything (of value) without God. Even in the natural world, we rely on Him for our very life and breath. When we finally come to this knowledge and accept Him as Lord of our life, He blesses us further by giving us access to Heaven!
I used to think I had to wait until I passed away to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, but in recent years, I learned we have the keys to the Kingdom now. Our inheritance is today. Yes, we will live there in the “by and by” as well, but we can have Heavenly encounters in this life also if we desire that. We just have to get closer to Him. I confided to my husband a few years ago that I was nervous about the rapture being too close. It wasn’t that I did not think I would make Heaven my home, but that I really didn’t know enough yet about God. I said, “if we are going to spend eternity with Him in the afterlife, shouldn’t we get to know Him more now?” This thought has kept inspiring me to become more intimate in my walk with Jesus. As I get closer, instead of getting bored, I have found it is only getting more exciting.
Even though I’m learning a lot, I still have to remind myself sometimes that it is not my own efforts that keep me in God’s presence. That’s why this first beatitude has been so helpful for me. Faith without works is dead, but it is through grace by faith that I am saved. Only He can do that for me, so I must always remember what He did and remain poor in spirit.
