The Bible says in Numbers 12:3 that Moses was the meekest man on the face of the earth. Of course, Moses wrote that didn’t he? If the Bible says that Moses was the humblest man on the planet, I believe it. Meekness is not weakness; it is quiet strength.
So how did Moses become so meek? After he tried taking matters into his own hands by killing an Egyptian, he had to flee Egypt to escape. For the next 40 years, he not only lived in the desert, but it was in the backside of the desert, where he got a job tending sheep for his father-in-law Jethro. He was humbled. God had to break him so that He could use him.
David came to humility in a different way. He was confronted by Nathan the prophet after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba and had Uriah the Hittite killed. After being confronted with his sin by Nathan the prophet, he acknowledged that he was “the man.” Then he wrote that beautiful Psalm 51 where he says create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. This is a prayer of repentance and although there were consequences for his sin, God forgave him. A broken and a contrite spirit, God will not despise and can use again for His purposes.
Memorial weekend will mark 43 years that I have lived in Vegas. So, I have wandered the desert for 40 + years myself. I have also had my share of “lower” positions. I started at Mickey D’s, then went on to become a failed food delivery driver before there was such a thing called uber eats or door dash. I tried to sell Kirby’s, but it only lasted a month maybe. I’ve worked in cabinet shops, call centers, warehouses, paint stores, convenience stores selling Slurpee’s, temp agencies, bussed tables at a few restaurants and other odd jobs. For my grand finale, I started as a cab driver in 1993, and I worked my way up to part time cab driver in 2026.
That was my Moses experience because I also encountered Jesus along the way. I wish I could say that after being born again I never sinned again, but like David, I have had to repent, more than once. It is by the grace of God through faith in the Cross that I am saved. God is love, joy, peace, patient, kind, good, and faithful (all fruit of the Spirit by the way).
Jesus humbled Himself. He took on the form of a servant and became obedient unto death. I am so glad that He never gave up on me. I love him very much. Going forward, I pray I can walk worthy, (as a prisoner of the Lord) the vocation that God has called me to: With all lowliness and meekness, walking humbly with my God.
