Bible Study Weekly Recap - KINDNESS

Author: Jerry Baca

In the Bible, there are many examples of people that showed kindness, compassion, and generosity. We covered some of them in the Bible study. We are told to show kindness to strangers, (they might be angels) kindness to one another, and to be kind to animals.

Abraham showed kindness to strangers, Ruth showed kindness to her family, David showed kindness to Mephibosheth. We also learned a little about the Good Samaritan, who went out of his way to show kindness including spending money to help the man that some religious folks were trying to avoid. So, we learned that religiosity does not mean that we are righteous. In fact, religious people can be mean.

We learned about the kindness of God who does not treat us as our sins deserve. God shows us His kindness through Jesus. He forgave sins, healed people, and fed the hungry as some examples.

Something that we did not cover was the story of a woman who was called a sinner in Luke chapter 7. She came to see Jesus while He was having a meal at the house of a Pharisee. She brought in an alabaster box of ointment. She anointed Jesus’ feet with the costly oil, washed His feet with her tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head and she kissed His feet. This of course made the religious folks mad and said, “If He were a prophet, He would have known who she is and what manner of woman she is.” Jesus told a parable about a creditor that had two debtors. One owed five hundred pence and the other fifty. He forgave the debts of both men and asked, which of them would love him most? The one he forgave most was the answer. Jesus said, “Do you see this woman? I entered into the house, and they gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head. They gave Me no kiss but the woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss My feet. They did not anoint My head with oil, but the woman has anointed My feet with ointment. Her sins that were many are forgiven.” She was forgiven much, therefore she loved Him much. He said to the woman, “your faith has saved you, go in peace.” Wow! Thank you, Jesus!

The woman showed Jesus great kindness, while the Pharisees did not. How can we show kindness to Jesus? Look for opportunities to be kind to others and do it as unto the Lord.
